What kind of society are the Veterans in your life coming back to?

November 6, 2016

The drive behind BelKat’s development of our book, educational workshops and diagnostic toolkit was to provide information to non-veterans in the community, workplace and higher education institutions about Veterans’ experience and the gaps that can exist between the military culture and that of civilian life. Our goal has continually been to create a Veteran-informed culture so that Veterans would feel welcomed and less alienated. This AWARENESS is the primary foundation for engaging, developing and retaining this new, emerging demographic.
In Sebastian Junger’s Ted Talk, “Our lonely society makes it hard to come home from war” https://www.ted.com/…/sebastian_junger_our_lonely_society_m… he provides a clear explanation of the importance of a veteran-informed society. He states that it is the lack of a close and cohesive environment that Veterans enter post-service that account for behavior issues, employment turnover or educational dropout. It is not the trauma experienced while serving. Our Veterans are leaving a close, cohesive and trust filled unit and joining a modern society that has proved to be hard even for non-veterans. To make it more difficult, there are multiple cultures that increase confusion, as we discuss in our book. For example, there are department cultures, company values, neighborhood cliques, and educational groups that all have unique elements that make Veteran’s feel alienated and make adapting difficult.
What kind of society are the Veterans in your life coming back to? Please take a look at Sebastian Junger’s presentation and even read his book, Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging. We support Junger’s assessment of our returning Veterans and his suggestions for helping them as they return. In fact, our program, Supporting Veterans Through Transition is built on the recognition that we all need to be informed of the reality that exists for those that have served us. If you are interested in learning more about how BelKat can help your organization create a veteran-informed culture, please feel free to contact us and visit our site! Our book will be released in November so check back and order your copy!
